ERS and ESR call for targeted and effective lung cancer screening programmes in Europe

The European Respiratory Society (ERS) and European Society of Radiology (ESR) call for EU level initiatives supporting targeted and effective lung cancer screening programmes across Member States in their new Factsheet.

It includes the following recommendations:

• Update the 2003 Council recommendation on cancer screening
• Develop European guidelines on lung cancer screening
• Promote education and quality assurance in lung cancer screening
• Increase funding for research
• Improve air quality
• Smoking cessation should complement lung cancer screening programmes
• Encourage member states to share best practices
